Biographies

Tony Kaye | From his beginnings as an art director in the London advertising scene in the 1980s to his breakthrough as one of the industry’s top film directors in the early ‘90s, Tony Kaye has continually challenged the conventions of whatever genre he is working in, be it feature films, documentaries, music videos, contemporary art or television commercials. As a master of versatility, Tony’s work as a commercials director in Europe and the U.S. runs the gamut, exhibiting a vast array of emotions and attitudes. Tony has created groundbreaking spots in a wide range of genres.

Tony’s commercial direction has won just about every major award given in the industry, from Cannes Lions to D&AD pencils to AICP/MoMA awards to Clios. In 2002 Tony Kaye was the first recipient of the Clios Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to advertising.

His first feature film, “American History X,” was a disquieting look at the impact of bigotry and racism among a Southern California family. The film received huge critical acclaim, and earned Edward Norton his first and only Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Similarly, Tony’s long awaited documentary, “Lake of Fire”, which he wrote, directed, shot and edited has been released to worldwide acclaim and has been short-listed for an Academy Award.

Tony recently completed production on his third feature film, “Detachment” starring Academy Award winner Adrienne Brody, as well as Christina Hendricks, James Caan, Lucy Liu, and more. He is in post-production on the film at this time as he continues to travel the world shooting commercials for the world’s top advertising agencies and music videos for that world’s most interesting artists.

Lucy Walker | Lucy Walker is best known for directing the critically acclaimed documentary feature films Blindsight (2006), Waste Land (2010) and Countdown to Zero (2010). Both Waste Land and Countdown to Zero premiered at Sundance 2010 – the first time a documentary director has had two feature films in one year at this festival.

Blindsight follows the emotional journey of six blind Tibetan teenagers who climb up the north side of Mt. Everest with their hero, blind American mountaineer Erik Weihenmeyer, and their teacher, Sabriye Tenberken, who founded Braille Without Borders, the only school for the blind in Tibet.

Waste Land is the uplifting story of Brazilian artist Vik Muniz and a lively group of catadores, or pickers of recyclable materials, who find a way from the world’s largest garbage dump in Rio to the most prestigious auction house in London via the surprising transformation of refuse into contemporary art.

Walker is also the first filmmaker to ever win the Berlin Audience Award twice, for both Blindsight and Waste Land.

Adrien Brody | I have “seen the light” since childhood in a very specific way thanks to the constant creative, visual perspective that my mother (acclaimed New York Photographer Sylvia Plachy) has shared with me. Over the past twenty-five years I have performed in over forty films, and have had the privilege to intimately work with true master filmmakers (Polanski, Mallick, Coppola, Soderbergh, Ken Loach, Spike Lee, Barry Levinson, Peter Jackson, etc.). My entire adult life has been devoted to the art of subtly communicating emotion and ideas through visual storytelling, the delicate task of creative problem solving that is required on set when unforeseen obstacles occur, and the ever elusive goal of capturing magic on film.

Jeffery Plansker | Jeffery Plansker grew up in advertising. His father was a creative director and Head of Production on various automotive accounts for 40+ years. Jeffery’s initial work was as a photographer and graphic designer. Eventually those interests converged in the form of film, music videos, and commercials.

In the 15 years that he has been directing, Jeffery has worked with some of the best advertising agencies in the business. These clients include: Goodby, Silverstein; TBWA/CHIAT; Fallon; Modernista; Mother; Weiden & Kennedy; Leo Burnett; Hill/Holiday; and scores of others. With the addition of his Price/Waterhouse and PBS work Jeffery has established himself as one of the premiere storytellers in the business.

Jeffery lives in Pasadena, California, where he pursues his interests in online radio webcasting, a jazz record label, historic cars, and cactus gardening.

Greg Popp | Ironically, Greg Popp never intended a career in advertising. Originally a student filmmaker, Greg co-wrote, -directed, -photographed, and –edited a dramatic short and a feature length narrative during his years at Northwestern University. Among other accolades, his work appeared on both HBO and Showtime.

A nearly 20-year detour as a producer at DDB Chicago resulted in a prolific and much-awarded relationship with Anheuser-Busch. Greg’s work on Budweiser has won literally every major advertising honor. His freshman directing efforts have already won numerous awards, including Gold and Bronze Lions at Cannes, Clios, Andy Awards and distinction for humor and talent performance at AICP/MoMA.

Since joining Supply + Demand in the summer of 2005, Greg has directed many projects for clients such as Toyota, Alltel, McDonalds, M&M Mars, Budweiser, Labatts, Burger King and Subway amongst many others.

Greg intends to draw from his experience as an agency veteran, combined with his skills as a storyteller, to direct commercials with intelligence and wit. While not on set, Greg can be found performing with his original rock band Critical Mass at established music venues in the Chicago area.

Sean Thonson | A graduate of Arts Center, Sean Thonson first became interested in still photography at a very young age. Continuing in the footsteps of his father, who taught graphic design and photography at Humboldt State University, Thonson hardly recalls a time when he didn’t have a camera in his hands. Taking advantage of his father’s knowledge (and his dark room), Thonson began an ongoing study of light and composition that would eventually lead him to his career in directing/ cinematography.

In 1992, Thonson made a transition from still photography to film becoming one the world’s top directors in the field of high performance automotive advertising. With a prestigious client list that includes Alpha Romeo, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ferrari, Fiat, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Honda, Lexus, Mercedes, Saab, Toyota and Volvo, Thonson has branched out to extend his vivid style of filmmaking to commercials driven by story and character.

Thonson is based in Southern California.

Josh Taft | Commercial and Music Video director Josh Taft began his career as an influential part of one of the seminal creative movements of the 1990’s, and has since matured into a highly accomplished, award-winning filmmaker.

After graduating from NYU Film School in 1989, Josh Taft returned to his hometown of Seattle, Washington where he began shooting grassroots videos for his musician friends, such as Mother Love Bone (the predecessor to Pearl Jam), Soundgarden, and other Seattle successes. Needless to say, the Seattle scene took off and Taft’s Pearl Jam videos such as “Alive” and “Even Flow” (featuring Eddie Vedder’s famous stage dive) were instrumental in spreading the phenomenon across the globe.

After forming his own company, Cowboy Films, Taft followed with videos for other alternative acts such as Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains; as well as a variety of many other artists and musical genres. He received several MTV Video Music Awards and Billboard Awards for his work during this prolific period.

With his authentic style and ability to reach discerning masses established, Josh Taft then made the natural segue to commercial directing. His spots for clients such as Adidas, Reebok, Nike, Energizer, Sprite and Nissan Xterra are among some of the most memorable campaigns of recent years. In 2003, he won a Lion Award at the Cannes Festival for his Nike “Stickman Basketball” and was a “Gold” Clio Award in 2004 for his Nike “Frisbee,” “Hoops,” and “Football.” This year he received another Lion Award for Coca-Cola “Round The Fire.”

Landis Smithers | Landis Smithers, born on the day that man first walked on the moon, raised by an ex-beauty queen, and schooled by Jesuits, was destined to tell really interesting stories. Landis graduated from Cornell University with a degree in English and Social Anthropology. His parents were much relieved when he landed a job, any job that is, in the esteemed field . . . of advertising.

He spent over a decade crafting campaigns and winning awards for clients. Concurrently he founded a highly regarded interior design firm and began consulting for retail clients. He became known for predicting trends in fashion and culture, for casting rising talents, and for introducing many clients to the concept of “warm aspiration”, which Landis describes as, “attainable glamour mixed with a little bit of daydreaming.”

Landis worked on brands as wide ranging as Pantene, Coors, Snapple, and Secret, before joining Ogilvy as a Partner/Creative Director on Dove during the launch of the “Campaign for Real Beauty”. His later work with Old Navy was equally crucial in the brand perception spike that transformed Old Navy’s reputation.

Robert Logevall | Robert grew up in Sweden, and moved to Vancouver to attend art school. He began his career in Canada working as an art director and a production designer for a wide range of top international directors in commercials and music videos, and went on to do three feature films as a production designer. His first project as a director won numerous music video awards in Canada, and shortly thereafter, he began directing commercials in the U.S. market. He produced a body of award-winning commercials and music videos, as well as the acclaimed short film Vexation Island, with artist Rodney Graham, which opened at the Venice Biennale and went on to play at the Tate and other major galleries around the world.

At Anonymous Content, Robert directed the film All God’s Children Can Dance, adapted from a short story by the acclaimed Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. All God’s Children Can Dance has screened at several film festivals and recently premiered on IFC. Robert has directed memorable commercials and campaigns for clients Volkswagen, Lexus, Michelob, Tommy Hilfiger, Ford, HSBC, Lincoln Financial and, since joining FRANKmedia, for Visa, Chrysler, Verizon, AARP, Southwest Airlines & Toyota. His famous campaigns for Audi and Lincoln Financial won multiple honors at the AICP Show at MOMA in New York, and he has received numerous other awards as well.

Robert currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.

Margo Weathers | I am not adept at boredom. I have an imagination that never grew up, and a work ethic that never saw a childhood. I will never ask someone to try harder than myself – but want every single person to leave a job convinced that it was a day well spent –and having found themselves capable of something they never thought possible.

I am fond of run-on sentences.

I know that ideas can come from absolutely anywhere. But that inspiration only comes to those who ardently seek it – like a smug cat. I am overly fond of analogies. I drop Paul Arden quotes like breadcrumbs through a forest of ideas – and you will never, ever see me eat chocolate.

Gabriela Cowperthwaite | I am a 12-year documentary filmmaker, a Brazilian singer, a soccer player & a mom of twins. My strength lies in truthful storytelling – a place where real people and their stories reign over hype and spectacle. I have made award-winning films for Discovery, History Channel and National Geographic and my feature film City Lax: An Urban Lacrosse Story was distributed by ESPN and DirectTV, and still continues to sell out screenings and win awards at festivals. I believe real moments are beautiful, captivating and wonderfully unpredictable. I especially love being present, camera in hand, when the universe throws a surprise party. I live in Los Angeles with my husband, Brian, and our 5-year old sons Max and Diego.

Ondrea Barbe | Ondrea Barbe hails from Santa Cruz, California. After living in Paris for seven years, Ondrea moved to New York City in 1998. It was at this time that she started to be featured in various art galleries for her still photography.

Ondrea has brought her creative vision to print campaigns for clients such as Clinique, Garnier, L’Oreal, Ojon, Bobbi Brown, Dove and the Showtime original television series ‘The Real L Word’; her photographs of celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel Weisz, Selma Blair and Julianne Hough have been featured as the covers of various magazines. Ondrea believes filmmaking ‘is the celebration of making feelings visual. Everybody has something that sparkles, tickles, evokes and remains’. This sentiment is exemplified in Ondrea’s advertising images where exquisite beauty meets fun, fresh style.

Matthew Rolston |True beauty really comes from an inner light. That’s what I want to expose. Beauty and light are my ‘thing’.

My photography career began at Interview magazine, where I was ‘discovered’ by Andy Warhol. Since then, I have shot celebrities and beauty for Rolling Stone, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, W, and many others.

This work naturally led to my directing music videos for those same celebrities. And that led to television commercials. I still do all of those things. I shoot photographs, direct film – creating magazine covers, music videos, television commercials, and more.

Recently, I’ve expanded into brand creation and hospitality design. For example, I recently developed an entirely new hotel brand.

Even though my work is incredibly diverse, there must be some kind of uniting factor – clients always call it “Matthew Magic”. I’m not sure what that is, but maybe it’s a kind of romance.
